Teen & Adult Summer Art Classes 2018

We have several different sessions for teens and adults this June, July and August so pick which ones are right for you and your schedule and we’ll see you in the studio (or even out in nature) this summer!

TEEN DRAWING & PAINTING FUNDAMENTALS
(ages 11-18)

Sessions:

  • JULY Summer Art Studio
    Week #1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (Dates: July 3 & 5 / 10 & 12 / 17 & 19 / 24 & 26 / 31 & 8/2)
  • AUGUST Summer Art Studio
    Week #1, 2, 3, 4 (Dates: Aug 7 & 9 / 14 & 16 / 21 & 23 / 28 & 30)

Ages & Times:

  • AGES 11-13: TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS 5 – 7PM
    Introductory classes in drawing & painting, exploring various techniques.
  • AGES 14-18: TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS 7 – 9PM
    Intermediate & advanced classes in drawing & painting with portfolio development.

Drawing:
The mediums will be pencil, charcoal, conte crayon, pastel, pen & ink to learn the fundamentals of drawing. The course will cover the basic concepts as composition, scale, perspectives, form, tone, shading, large scale grid drawing, etc. They will follow the instructor’s guidelines and explore various techniques. In addition, students will be encouraged to add their own style/artistic touches to all their artwork. All supplies are included in class tuition.

Painting:
The mediums will be watercolor, sumie, acrylics or oils; to learn the fundamentals of painting. The class will cover the basic concepts as composition, scale, perspectives, creating 3D form, shading/shadow, etc. Students will receive an overview about color: understanding complementary vs contrasting combinations, mixing and more. The instructor will guide them with step by step guidelines to complete a painting using the correct approach and techniques, at their own level. Canvases up to 11×14 will be provided; larger sized canvases, acrylic & oil paint sets, brushes, mediums and other tools will be required by student to bring to class.* < oil paints & brushes are available for purchase at studio for reasonable prices. >

CREATING FANTASY WORLDS & CREATURES
(ages 11 – 18)

 

Sessions:

  • JULY: 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 — Mondays 5:30 – 7:30
  • AUGUST: 6, 13, 20 & 27 — Mondays, 5:30 – 7:30

Description:
Creating otherworldly environments and imaginary creatures. Students will begin with sketches and more developed drawings, which will segway into making a painting, using acrylics. The instructor will encourage tapping into ones “idea bank” and using their own originality, personal style to create this piece. Through the process, students will learn about various drawing and painting techniques. Canvas will be provided for (up to 11×14 size). Acrylic paint sets & brushes will need to be purchased for class.

Instructor:
Annabelle Popa, graduate of LaGuardia High School in Manhattan with a major in art has a BFA from Parsons School of Design. She has worked as a graphic artist, mural painter, art instructor and character artist for Mazix Creations designing 30 characters with 3view turn around illustrations, etc.

PAINTING WITH AURORA
(Teens & Adults)

 

Sessions:

  • JULY: 1, 8, 15, 22 & 19 — Sundays 1:00-3:00PM
  • AUGUST: 5, 12, 19 & 26 — Sundays 1:00-3:00PM


Description:
ALL LEVELS. Students will create their own painting of choice, whether it be a still life, portrait or landscape from a tabletop setup or photo or internet reference. The instructor will encourage to find subjects that they appeal to them: ie a pet, favorite photo or other reference image. Through the process, students will learn about various painting techniques and grasp a good understanding about form, color, light, etc.

Instructor:
Aurora Abzug has painted from a very young age and studied oil painting formally at The Ridgewood Art Institute for 7 years as a teen. She has exhibited in various galleries including The South Texas Institute for The Arts. Currently an art major at Bard College, her focus is on Painting. Aurora has been teaching at the iStation from the Fall of 2016.

INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED DRAWING INTENSIVE
(Teens & Adults)

  • JUNE 8, 2 — Fridays 5:30-8:30PM
  • JULY: 6, 20 — Fridays 5:30-8:30PM
  • AUGUST: 3, 17, 31  — Fridays 5:30-8:30PM


Description:
INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED. For the motivated older teen and more serious student/adult, this class will teach drawing techniques for fine-tuning the work with attention to details. All materials will be provided for, but instructor recommends students bring a sketchbook and variety of drawing tools including pencils (2B, 6B, charcoal, white charcoal, blending tool, gum eraser).

Instructors:

  • Laianna Ferruggia graduated from New Paltz with a BS in painting; continuing her studies in art while in Paris and Provence with Tom Sarrantonio (plein air landscapes). She was mentored by Andrew Lattimore in Cornwall NY for 3 years and was academically trained at the world renowned Florence Academy of Art with a focus on drawing and painting. Her work has been exhibited at New Century Artists in Chelsea, NYC and Bau Gallery in Beacon; her upcoming solo show at Shortwave Gallery in Stone Harbor, NJ.

PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE OIL PAINTING
(Teens & Adults)

 

Sessions:

  • JULY: 1, 15, 29 –Sundays 9:30 am-12:30 pm
  • AUGUST: 12, 26  — Sundays 9:30 am-12:30 pm


Location:
TBA. Local park or farm.

Description:
For the adventurous nature lover who has always dreamt of trying your hand at plein air painting. Trained formally in Europe, the instructor will guide students to create magnificent landscapes, as those they see around and before themselves. Students will receive instruction on the principles of painting outdoors from composition, scale, perspectives, color theory, value and much more. Working on location in the field, observing and recording nature is an exhilarating experience. *Easels will be provided for; students are required to bring wood panels, oil paint sets & brushes with them; turpentine and linseed oil. <oil paint sets & brushes available at studio for reasonable prices>
